Two health system leaders join the Foundation Board of Directors
Leaders at two of the region’s leading health systems are joining the Board of Directors at the Mayfield Education & Research Foundation, strengthening collaboration between hospitals and the foundation dedicated to leading-edge research and medical training.

The new board members are Brian Gwyn, President of Mercy Health-Cincinnati, and Dr. Kevin Schuler, executive medical director of Peri-operative Services and medical director of Cancer Quality and Accreditation at St. Elizabeth Healthcare.
“The Mayfield Foundation continues to expand as a hub for research and clinical expertise around the most complex cranial and spinal disorders,” said Dr. William Tobler, chairman of the Foundation Board of Directors. “Together with the clinicians of Mayfield Brain & Spine, we are proud to collaborate with specialists and clinical leaders at hospitals throughout the region and around the country, helping us to serve patients no matter where they receive their care.”
Gwyn assumed leadership in February 2023 of Mercy Health’s six Cincinnati-area hospitals, plus outpatient centers and primary care offices. He previously served for 15 years in a variety of leadership positions at Atrium Health, a North Carolina-based nonprofit system. He earned bachelors and master’s degrees at Appalachian State University and an MBA at Gardner-Webb University.
Dr. Schuler is a Northern Kentucky native who earned his undergraduate degree at Thomas More University, his medical degree at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and his residency in obstetrics and gynecology and fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Schuler practiced for nearly 10 years before assuming leadership roles at St. Elizabeth in late 2022.
