Mayfield neurosurgeons lead new clinical trial, build research capacity

CINCINNATI – Mayfield Brain & Spine, the region's premier neurosurgery practice, announced that the first patients have been enrolled in a new clinical trial to investigate GammaTile® targeted therapy to treat newly diagnosed metastatic brain tumors.

Sponsored by GT Medical Technologies, the maker of the targeted radiation therapy GammaTile, the trial is supported by the Mayfield Education & Research Foundation. The foundation supports the work of Mayfield neurosurgeons through education and research. In partnership with Mercy Health Bon Secours, the clinical trial is led by Principal Investigator Vince DiNapoli, MD, PhD, a Mayfield neurosurgeon and director of the Brain Tumor Center at The Jewish Hospital-Mercy Health, along with Co-Investigators Ronald Warnick, MD, and Yair Gozal, MD, PhD, also neurosurgeons at Mayfield Brain & Spine. For the first case, Dr. DiNapoli was joined by Dr. Gozal and Elizabeth Levick, MD, radiation oncologist at OHC.

The new clinical trial is an intervention in the drive to understand and reduce the effects of metastatic cancer, putting Mayfield and its research partners on the cutting edge of brain tumor care. Mayfield is the only site in Ohio for this clinical trial.

Mayfield neurosurgeons have been active in clinical research for decades. By participating in new clinical trials, the independent neurosurgery practice and its researchers are trying to develop new therapies for patients, connect with other innovators and establish Greater Cincinnati as a destination for the highest level of neurosurgical care.

"At Mayfield, we are committed to improving clinical outcomes for patients through research and education," said Mark Vorherr, Mayfield's chief executive officer. "At the core of that promise is a dedication to investigating clinical alternatives to patients through cutting-edge research."

Mayfield is ramping up investments in a growing research program in 2021, including expanded clinical trials, additional laboratory programs, more published research in scholarly publications and increased access to outcomes data. The resources from the Mayfield Foundation to support research and education will keep Mayfield at the forefront of advanced neurosurgical care and help fulfill our historic commitments to our patients and community.

Clinical trials will be a key element in the Institute for Complex Cranial Research, a collaborative effort launched by Mayfield in partnership with the region's leading health systems. An increasing clinical trials presence, along with bioskills laboratory educational programs at the Mayfield Surgical Innovation Center, are key components of Mayfield's dedication to improving patient outcomes through research and education.
