Amy Murray brings civic, corporate leadership to Mayfield Foundation Board of Directors

Board Member Amy Murray

Amy Murray, former Cincinnati City Council member and Procter & Gamble Co. executive, has joined the Mayfield Education & Research Foundation Board of Directors.

The addition of an experienced civic and business leader will help the Foundation increase support of leading-edge neurosurgery innovation, said Board Chair Dr. William Tobler, who retired in June after 39 years as a neurosurgeon at Mayfield Brain & Spine.

"Amy has been a patient at Mayfield, so she understands the ways that a nationally recognized independent neurosurgery practice in Cincinnati can make lives better for patients, both from this region and around the country," Dr. Tobler said. "Her deep engagement in the community will help us advance our mission of using innovation to advance the care of patients with the full range of brain and spine disorders."

Murray praised how Mayfield has continued to expand its services, building on the mission that has anchored the practice since its founding in 1937. She is excited at the Foundation's ambitions to increase support for promising research and help develop the next generation of neurosurgeons. She noted plans for the Brain Tumor Institute at Mayfield, which aims to establish this region as a destination for elite brain tumor care.

"By creating a situation where patients can stay in Cincinnati and get the care they need, the Institute can allow them to be supported by their family and friends, closer to their home environment," Murray said. "We believe that leads to better outcomes."

Murray underwent spine surgery with Dr. Tobler earlier this year. Dr. Tobler also has treated her husband with several operations. She said Mayfield's care for her family underscored the impact the independent practice can have.

"I was always in pain before the surgery, and I went straight to Dr. Tobler," she said. "I've just seen the work he's done with my husband, and I know Mayfield has treated so many other families with the same great outcomes."

Murray served on Cincinnati City Council in 2011, and again from 2013-2020. She previously worked for 14 years in Global Business Development for Cincinnati-based P&G, leading customer business development programs in Asia. Most recently, she served in the U.S. Department of Defense as deputy assistant secretary of industrial policy, and director of the Office of Small Business. Currently, she is a senior fellow at the National Defense Industrial Association and a member of the Board of Directors of American Financial Group Inc.
